Experience: Lunchtime Lecture #3

On Wednesday the 20th of February,  we had another Lunchtime Lecture and Sasha Waters Freyer. She is the Department Chair of Photography and Film at VCU, and she is a Film maker. I mainly focused on her discussions regrading her short films. They remind me a lot of collages, but with a third detention of time added on. I liked the experimental nature of them and the visuals reminded me of serial killers for some weird reason. If the music was in a higher pitch and slower the clip we were shown could fit in a horror movie. Freyer said she liked to use "the medium of film as plastic artistic medium," akin to painting, especially in its shot structure. So, a self-identified painter, I immediately started to recognize the relationship between the two. They are both very fluid, time consuming art forms that need intense patience, and require so much planning(or winging it as many people[me] tend to do) and preciseness to achieve a certain goal. However, they both have an unrestricted freedom about them, allowing their creators to do whatever they want in order to express themselves. Although I would never try this medium, because I don't have nearly enough patience to work with technology, I appreciate it weirdness, also it seems really expensive, or at least Documentary work is expensive. I feel bad for her that this film making can't be her career and that she has to supplement it with teaching and writing, but I understand that not everyone can do what they love most as a profession, because if that was the case my sister would be a professional sleeper, and my brother would be a professional Fortnite addict. I appreciate the messages that she is trying to portray in her documentaries, giving a voice to outcasts, and people who usually don't get the spotlight, and I generally like her work.

I think I am finished at this point. I really like the roughness and the little hints of blue and red through out it. Today I didn't really do much to change it; I just made subtle agustments and my main focus was on the sides, smoothing them out, making the color consistent and adding some pops of color on the edges between the sides and the front panel. I am pretty happy with the way that it turned out. Below this are some close-ups of parts that I like and want to highlight.

I apologize for the terrible angle of my painting, I forgot to take one the day I painted it so I went back the next school day and took a picture of it. I was rushed because I didn't want to miss my bus, and the painted had been moved from its original spot, so I wasn't super careful in taking the picture.
I really like how it is turning out. I like the subtlty of the color changes and the little flecks of color I have sprinted throughout the various shades of black. You can't really see it in the picture, but there is slight texture that I really like in the mustard color that came from its super thick texture due to I think age. I don't really known. But I am overall happy with it.

I am very happy with my painting at this point. I don't really like the red-orange smudges in the yellow section, so I think I will paint over them next class. Right not the painting is reminding me of the new Twenty-one pilots album with the color scheme and overall vibe. I did not mean for that to happen, but I think it is funny that it has progressed that way. I am very happy with my subtle nuances of color throughout the painting, they can't really been seen in the photo though.

I am mostly happy with my progress. I was significantly happier, however, before it dried. It looked much more cohesive and you couldn't see the the slice things in the middle right section. Honestly it is a disaster right now and I'll probably cover up everything. I especially don't like the smear of the lighter black color on the bottom. I made it trying to cover up some yellow that I didn't want to be there and I didn't mix it with the blue paint so it really stands out and annoy's me.

Today I started my "Abstract Expressionist" painting and I didn't get very far. I just painted the canvas black because I wanted to have that dark starting point to build more layers upon. Although it looks like the top right is a different color, it is not. The paint there had already dried and I painted another coat just below it to fill in some patchy layers. The canvas was not yet dry when I had to take a picture of it.
